Families Who Dine Together, Stay Together

If you want children to eat vegetables, why not give them delicious pumpkin soup? This strategy worked well recently when Jesuit Volunteers Jackie and Kelly made dinner. Both JVs work at St. Anne’s Children and Family Center, and they knew the preschoolers would love helping to measure out ingredients and put them into the pots in the Kids’ Kitchen. The children’s parents and siblings arrived to consume the scrumptious results. “We wanted to bring families together to share a meal,” explains Jackie. Kelly adds, “We took the kids to the Farmers’ Market before we started cooking so they could get an idea about where the food comes from.” The event gave the JVs a chance to educate children and their families about nutrition and the advantages of eating locally. It also gave them a chance to see some pretty cute grins as the kids ate their soup!
