CAPA Receives Target Grant

Catholic Charities Childbirth and Parenting Assistance (CAPA) Program has been awarded a Target grant to provide “Bringing Up Baby” parenting classes.  Bringing Up Baby is a 10 week parenting class which focuses on children newborn through age 3.  Skills learned include; newborn skills, attachment and bonding, stress management, effective discipline, healthy lifestyles, and various other topics focused on encouraging healthy parent-child connections.  CAPA is proud to collaborate with Target on providing this service to our community.

Counseling:  CAPA offers free therapy with a Master’s-level therapist to pregnant women and parents with young children ages three and under.  Parents may be counseled throughout pregnancy and post-partum months.  Call for more information.

Doula Mentor Project:  Community volunteers are matched as mentors with first-time expectant women, or mothers with a child age newborn to one year.  The young mother and mentor are encouraged to meet face-to-face for two hours per week for a one-year commitment.  They enjoy mutually satisfying activities such as crafts, games, parties, exercise, cooking, shopping, etc.

The Childbirth and Parenting Assistance (CAPA) Doula Project is currently looking for volunteers who would like to participate as mentors to young pregnant women, or first-time mothers with babies 0-12 months of age.  A "Doula" is a mentor, not a labor coach, who provides support and encouragement to a mother.  This is a perfect opportunity for those wanting to make a difference in a young mom’s life. Volunteers must have “hands-on” parenting experience (birth mother, adoptive mom, step-mom, or foster mom), have a high school education or GED, and be a minimum of 26 years old. Volunteers must also have a current driver’s license and a safely operating car. Call CAPA for dates and times. Enrollment is limited. For more information, call the CAPA Doula Project at 455-4970.

A Photographic Moment

On Monday, March 8, 2010, CAPA hosted a Photography Day, sponsored by Cravens Coffee, for CAPA families.  Thank you to Becky Templin for the amazing photographs which captured the beauty and resiliency of our CAPA moms and babies!  A special thank you to Sandra Gormon Brown who helped organize this wonderful event and truly has CAPA in her heart and thoughts.  We are so appreciative of Blades design group including Tiffany Wheeler, Danielle Riddle, Kellie Jackson, Margot Williams who all helped our moms feel beautiful by providing them with a makeover for this event.  You are all such a blessing!  ~ Libby Hein, CAPA Director

The Laundry Basket Project

The Laundry Basket Project provides parents with needed baby supplies and laundry baskets! A parish, school, community group, etc. can collect baby items such as diapers, blankets, pacifiers, teething rings, and clothes, then place them in a laundry basket for CAPA. Practical and fun, these baskets provide much needed supplies to our sparents and their babies, plus a laundry basket to tote clothes to the Laundromat!  For more information, please call Libby Hein at 455-4972.
