Hoopfest Results
This year three teams represented Partners for Community Living at Hoopfest. “Pretty Cool Ladies,” did a great job and only lost one game! Their team consisted of Jackie, Carolyn, Kathleen and Charlene (our property manager). “The Caroling Cheryl’s” did a wonderful job as well, especially keeping up their team spirit. If you haven’t guessed already, Carol and Cheryl played on this team along with Gerald, and Alyssa’s JV roommate, Jon. Sheri and Jhary played on the “Super Hoopers” with Alyssa and her friend Adam. Janice came by to help cheer us on! Thanks, Janice! The scores were close and the temperature hot, but all in all it was fun and the teams practiced great sportsmanship. We are proud of your efforts!
How Does Your Garden Grow?
After many grueling hours of removing grass and weeds from our vegetable beds, we planted some green goodness hoping it makes it to our dinner plates. We were fortunate to receive help from our neighbors at Summit View with clearing out the weeds in Denny’s Place memorial garden. Isaac planted cucumber and tomato plants along with Janice and Cheryl. We planted a lot from seed too. Janice and Cheryl planted sunflowers, corn, and bush beans. Laura planted watermelon and tends to it daily! Carolyn planted radishes, lettuce, mint, thyme and cilantro. Alyssa planted some carrots, raspberry and pepper plants, and flowers. A special thank you to Becky, Janice’s sister, for donating tomato and pepper plants as well to Mrs. Shagen for donating raspberry starts, cilantro, thyme and mint. The seeds came from “100 Ways 100 Days.”
It is exciting to watch these plants flourish and taste the fruits of our labor!
Where’s the Good in Goodbye?
As our seasoned Bernadette Gazette readers know, this is the time of year when the Jesuit Volunteer returns to her home, school, or regular paid jobs. I too am following the trend, pursuing a job that is financially gainful, but where’s the good in goodbye? So I’m going where no PCL JV has gone before: nowhere. The blessings I’ve received from everyone at Partners have been so wonderful that I chose to stay on as a regular full-time staff person on Carol’s focus staff.
I would like to take this time to share my positive experiences here as the JV. Like my predecessors, I never thought I could work with this population because I was always told, “It takes a special person to do that kind of work.” I don’t necessarily agree with that anymore. Yes, it takes some patience and a sense of humor, a little bit of spirit and a lot of compassion, but many of us possess these traits, not just a “special few.” I have enjoyed impromptu dancing, latch hooking, visiting the neighborhood cat house, festive parties, gatherings, cooking, and cleaning alongside our program participants. Thank you to all the participants and their families who have opened up their hearts and homes for me; it has truly been a blessing!
Incoming!
Like always… August is the time for a new Jesuit Volunteer to bring fresh perspectives, ideas and attitude. This year we have Sarah Bernardi coming to us from Connecticut. She’ll be taking over the Gazette at which time she can give her own introduction. We welcome her to the Inland Northwest and Pacific Standard Time!
